The author's later book, "Birds without Wings" was set in Turkey during WW1. This one is set in Greece during WW2. One character is the same. Bernieres is a magnificent writer, combining humor and pathos in equal measure.
Don't be put off by the movie "Captain Corelli's Mandolin," which cheapens and changes the story unforgiveably.
