I read this book several times when I was younger and was thrilled to find it here in VG condition and at an astonishingly low price!
In the book, author George Plimpton, who from the late 1960's until is death in 2003 held the unofficial post of Fireworks Commissioner of New York City, relates in great detail the history of fireworks, his involvement with the Grucci family, and the love of fireworks shared by professionals and amateurs.
The early chapters are dedicated to the history of fireworks from the earliest times to present.
The middle chapters cover his relationship with the Grucci family, noted fireworks makers from Long Island. These chapters deal with the Grucci's history as fireworks makers including their winning a prestigious international fireworks competition in Monaco, their inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest firework ever launched, and the unfortunate death if Jimmy Grucci in an explosion at the family fireworks factory.
The later chapters deal with the largest annual display of fireworks in the world (the Perfect Liberty Church's annual Founder's Day celebration in Japan), as well as Plimpton's first-time ever attending of the conventions of the American Pyrotechnics Association (professionals) and the Pyrotechnics Guild International (amateurs).
I highly recommend this book to ANYONE with a love and passion for fireworks.
