Mandragon is a bawdy tale full of the blackest of humor. The Mandragon is a hermaphrodite, a creature who toys with both sexes; a magician, who reads people's minds and makes both people and objects obey his will; a seer, who travels into the future; and a prophet who brings his tribe back to his home country, Tinieblas, to cure the drought-wracked land.

'Mandragon' is the third novel in Koster's 'Tineablas Trilogy.' It is vividly imagined but not so well executed as the first two.
If 'The Dissertation' and 'The Prince' were 'magical realism' (I hold that they were not), 'Mandragon' is 'fantastical unrealism,' because it asks me to utterly suspend my disbelief while it tells me things that are utterly and fantastically unbelievable. The end of this book being what it is, I'm given to think that Mr. Koster was either utterly and fantastically sick of Tineablas by the time he got so far (whereupon he decided to kill the beast), or he had written himself into an utterly fantastic corner and could find no other way out.
Every author's career emits at least one stinker and with 'Mandragon,' I think, Koster fulfilled what some of us consider a professional obligation. The good news is that this boner won't kill him. He has already proven himself a brilliant novelist. He will write again and, due to the enormous strength of his first two books, I will give him another run at my wallet by buying his fourth book. If he burns me then, I'll have to put him on my list.
Koster fans and collectors will buy 'Mandragon' to fill out their 'Tineablas' set. Those just wanting a good read will pass this one up.
