Seller's Description:
Near Fine in Near Fine jacket. Book. 4to-over 9¾"-12" tall. Near Fine copy in a Near Fine dust jacket. 143pp including glossary and notes. From the selection and preparation of the raw materials to the fine-tuning and finishing of the final product, 88 Keys follows the creation of a piano in the Steinway and Sons factory in Long Island City, New York-a process that has changed little in the one hundred years that Steinway, the world's premier piano manufacturer, has been in business. An introduction relates the history of the piano and traces the history of the Steinway itself. The story then follows step by step the creation of the concert grand piano from 12, 000 individual parts. The exquisitely detailed and beautifully-rendered drawings set the tone for the dignity and care with which the ultimate grand piano-the only one in the world still made by hand-is crafted. Hardcover.

Seller's Description:
Fine in fine jacket. Fine in fine dust jacket. Oversized hardcover. Illustrated endpapers. 143 pp. with glossary index. Illustrated throughout with color and line drawings by Rodica Prato. Beloved by concert performers and amateur enthusiasts alike, the Steinway piano is the most complicated piece of musical machinery made by hand in the world today. Steinways are still being manufactures, after a century and a half, in the same Long Island City, New York factory that has always been its home. The author of the text is the great-great-grandson of the founder Henry Englehard Steinway and takes the reader on a journey from the selection and aging of the wood to the delicate voicing of the finished instrument. Find here, portrayed by Prado's lovely artwork, the strong men who bend grand piano rims to their trademark curve, the "belly men" who fit the harp to the wooden frame, the carvers who shape the piano's legs and pedal lyre, and the many other craftsmen who have perfected their specialized contributions of the finished product.

I've wanted this book ever since I read a review of it when it was first published. Finally, alibris gave me an inexpensive way to own it. I've found it is everything I'd wanted.
This is a loving and informative view of the building of a piano. The author is a family member and loves his family, his uncles, and the pianos his ancestor designed and his family produced.
The book goes into depths such as the wood properties and reason each wood is selected each part. Deep it may be, but the author never forgets the aesthetics. The illustrations are clear and beautiful at the same time.
