Of all Ms. Heyer's books on the realities of life in the early 1800s this is by far the most mature, delicate and understanding off them all.

Heyer is charming as always and gives good historical background. Main characters seem real (though some are overly exaggerated). Well written and entertaining.

serious with flashes of humor
This is Heyer's more realistic take on the arranged marriage, contrasted to her more frothy "The Convenient Marriage." Jenny and Adam are not only virtual strangers when they marry, but stand on very unequal social footings. And let's not forget Adam's unrequited love for Jenny's beautiful friend, whom he can't have since her family has no money. Things look rather grim for the plump, drab, awkward, and wealthy new bride. So, what can these two newlyweds do but try to make the best life for themselves they can, and endeavor to create a new kind of happily ever after. Will it work? Can it work? Heyer raises questions with this novel, like: What truly makes a husband and wife? What makes for happiness in marriage? What is the basis for love? Is there a soul mate out there, or a true love? Can you find the fairy tale, or create your own--and do you need one, really? And what do you do when not everyone is playing their parts like you envisioned as a child? This novel is the dramedy edition to the Heyer Regency/Georgian oeuvre. Despite the more serious tone, she still manages to leaven it with humor and delightful insights into human nature.
