The name the beleaguered inhabitants give to their 'sink' estate, a no-man's land of single mothers and fatherless children, where angry, alienated youth control the streets. Into this battlefield comes Sophie Morrison, a young doctor visiting a patient in Acid Row. The action is not in the well to do suburbs, but in a gritty housing project, where there is little money and lots of creative ways to make a few coins, often not legal. A social worker's loose lips set the tinder box on fire, figuretively, then literally.
Some amazing heroes arise from the madness and some pathetic human beings slide further into the hell of their homes and minds.
This is not a book for the faint of heart or the people who like fluffy puppies and frilly dresses.
It's where humaity meets the bottom of the barrel and survives on cunning, their wits and sometimes shear brute strength.

ACID ROW is a riveting drama full of suspense.
Acid Row is the nickname for a housing project in a suburb of London, known as Bassindale Estates. Single mothers with small children and elderly pensioners live among the drug dealers who have made this conclave a dangerous place. Minette Walters uses this grim setting as a backdrop to tell the stories of a missing ten year old girl, Amy Biddulph; Sophie, a young doctor taken hostage by the father of a known pedophile; Melanie, a feisty young woman trying to keep her family together; and, Jimmy, a brave young man, who transcends his criminal background to become a hero. In the critical mass of misinformation, the release of repressed anger, the influence of lager and assorted mind altering drugs, a battle of incredible proportion ensues. ?The headlines the next morning?29 July?were lurid. ?Alcohol-crazed lynch mob goes on the rampage? ? ?Sex pervert butchered? ? ?Five hours of savagery leaves 3 dead, 189 injured?? This book catches the reader off guard in a way few novels do and is able to sustain the action.
