Seller's Description:
8vo. [6], 279, [1] pp. Decorated adobe-red boards, white & black spine label (minor shelfwear, slight rubbing), w/ d.j. wraparound cover art by William F. Koch (minor chipping & small tear head of spine), still NF/VG-copy. First edition, stated, of this dark pulp western novel, which served as the basis for the violently anti-Apache movie Arrowhead, which starred Charlton Heston, Jack Palance, and Katy Jurado, and was directed by Charles Maquis Warren. The main character Walter Grein who violently suppresses the Apache led by Geronimo in the 1880s, was largely based on the life of Al Sieber, Chief of Scouts for General Crook, and mentor to Tom Horn. The novel and film were violently anti-Indian, and both used the Apache as a euphemism for communist subversion during the 1950s. Burnett (1899-1982) is best remembered for his gangster novels and screenplays for Little Caesar, Asphalt Jungle, and other film noir. See: Herzberg, Savages and Saints: The Changing Image of American Indians in Westerns, pp. 137-140; Frank Bellamy Checklist Blog, Lilliput and W.R. Burnett (2015).
