Don't read this book if you want a compelling plot leading you from one exciting event to another. This story ambles along confidently with not much happening except the delight of entering Thirkell's Barsetshire and meeting her utterly charming cast of characters - each drawn with affection, humanity, and humor. I recommend for those times you need a soothing read, a good laugh, and an escape from modern-day frenzy.

Silly But Satisfying
A playful story about people too silly not to be real. Angela Thirkell has an uncanny ability to portrayvanity and foolishness in its most human form and delight the reader while doing so. Another wonderful escape to a world of donkey carts, amateur theater and social obligations in the English countryside.
