Augustine was arguably the greatest early Christian philosopher. His teachings had a profound effect on Medieval scholarship, Renaissance humanism, and the religious controversies of both the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation. Here, Henry Chadwick places Augustine in his philosophical and religious context and traces the history of his influence on Western thought, both within and beyond the Christian tradition.

Seller's Description:
Good. Good condition. A copy that has been read but remains intact. May contain markings such as bookplates, stamps, limited notes and highlighting, or a few light stains.
I read this book for a class on Augustine, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is rather short, circa 120 pages, but packed with information, giving a great general overview of the life and thought of one of the minds on which Western thought rests. The writing style is very concise and polished. If you are looking for a good, but not exhaustive, view of Augustine, this is perfect. For serious Augustine scholars, however, one may find this a bit too short to really expound his beliefs in great detail.
