After reading the three books about Pagan last year, I was excited to see this new entry by Jinks, focusing on Pagan's illegitimate daughter Babylonne. I didn't remember the details of the end of the Pagan books, just that he was a high-ranking priest, so I was curious on the details of this bastard-child business. And it is interesting.
Babylonne herself is kind of amazing. She is fiesty, fiery, and optimistic -- as much as is possible for an abused orphan. Maybe idealistic or visionary, or just naive, are better descriptors than optimistic. She's rather pessimistic about the world, actually, but Isidore opens her eyes quite a bit in their short time together. I enjoyed the interaction between her and the red-headed priest; their dynamic has the ring of honesty to it as they explore a bit into one another's lives.
Like the Pagan stories, Jinks throws in plenty of arms and armaments, battles and sieges. They play a lot like the ones Pagan was in, but it is interesting to note the differences between his reaction / situation and Babylonne's. Jinks says in an author's note that Babylonne is probably angrier than Pagan ever was, and she seems to have a narrower view of fun. But again, as in any well-written work, she grows as a person through the story.
All in all, enjoyable, entertaining, exciting. A great read.
