This book is written for young adolescents, but is worth several re-readings. Layers of psychological complexity have opened discussions between myself, my daughter, and my mother: Why was it illegal to make whiskey? The girl never seems to feel abandoned - why? Right or wrong for the lawman to lie to her in order to put her father in jail? The father's feelings about putting his daughter in danger by telling about the found treasure. The amazing dedication of the dog Bill. My daughter first read this book at age 12, and still re-reads it at age 22. So do I.
