Alan Palmer shows in this biography of the Iron Chancellor that he has the admirable ability of bringing his subject to life. Easily readable, and full of anecdote and detail, this work casts a fresh light on Bismarck. Contrary to the scheming genius often portrayed it shows instead the great statesman's uncanny knack of taking advantage of political circumstances, both to benefit Prussia and, more importantly, to consolidate his position and to further himself. Any student of the period will enjoy this book and should also consider Alan Palmer's equally readable biography of the Kaiser.
