Anne Perry is always a good read. Her characters are memorable. Her Victorian London is authentic so that you can feel the damp of the London fog, the contrasts of wealth and poverty, and hypocrisies of the society. Lately the Monk novels have become a bit formulaic. Perry needs to break out of that formula of crime, investigation, and courtroom drama in which each of the characters fulfils their predictable role in the story. Getting out of London might help and introducing some new recurring characters might help.
