Not every guitarist is brave enough to follow in the footsteps of Clarence White, but there are exceptions. Not every guitarist is brave enough to follow in the footsteps of Clarence White, but there are exceptions. Sandy Rothman and Steve Pottier, both fine guitarists in their own right, decided to team up for 16 instrumentals on Bluegrass Guitar Duets. Many of these tunes, like "Weeping Willow" and "Black Mountain Rag," will be familiar, but even the oldest warhorses are given fresh workouts here. "In the Pines" has a lovely bluesy quality, while "Blue Guitar Yodel" pays homage to the late great Jimmie Rodgers. Pottier's quick runs sparkle on "Buffalo Gals," while Rothman's bouncy lead on "Brown's Ferry Guitar" is infectious. The spry "Flop-Eared Mule" and "Lonesome Road Blues" will leave the listener's head bobbing and feet tapping, while the waltz-flavored "Forsaken Love" will leave one looking for a dance partner. "When You and I Were Young, Maggie" adds a little Chet Atkins fingerpicking to the program, while "Black Mountain Rag" tips its hat to Doc Watson. The playing throughout is so accomplished that it will probably discourage many guitar hero wannabes from picking up their instrument for a week or two. Both guitars -- classic Martins -- have lovely tones. Even though both guitarists have distinct styles, it is helpful that Pottier is mixed to the left channel and Rothman to the right. This allows the listener to take in the continual interplay between the two musicians as they trade leads and offer supportive, engaging rhythm. For fans of Clarence White and Doc Watson, or for anyone who loves skillfully played guitar, Bluegrass Guitar Duets shouldn't be missed. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., Rovi Read Less
