A great book covering the period from the mid-1930s to the beginning of WWII. Masters served with the Indian Army, specifically in a Gurkha regiment. He writes of his training at Sandhurst, his "break-in period with a British regiment and his ultimate assignment to his Gurkha regiment. His regard for the Army and his beloved Gurkhas shines in this book. A well written joy to read. The pages turn much to fast - I would have liked reading this book to last a little longer. During the period covered, Masters served mainly on the Northwest Frontier. His descriptions of both garrison life and life on the march/in combat are clear and graphic. I like this book because Masters tells the story easily and talks of the values necessary to be successful in the life he chose without lecture or sermon. His writing in the latter regard is as current now as when he wrote it 50+ years ago.

End of an Empire
Personal narrative of a British officer serving with the Gurkha in India and Afghanistan just before the beginning of the II World War. John Masters gives us a very detailed and graphic description of a colonial army in its last moments. The book is also hilarious with several instances of pure British sense of humor. The sequel, The Road to Mandalay, is also a great book.
