Most of the paintings featured in this book are impressionistic, some are realistic; in each painting, Mason sought to create images that would reveal new insights with repeat viewing. Mason's use of oil on paper, applied almost exclusivly with a palette knife, brought a three-dimensional quality to these paintings and demanded a spontaneity that brush and canvas do not.
