I loved this book. Research has shown that sentence combining improves students' writing fluency, but most sentence combining texts use boring sentences written by the authors of the text. Stull, however, takes his examples from the works of excellent writers, like E.B. White, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Carson McCullers, Truman Capote, and many non-fiction writers. The sentences were written to say something effectively, not to illustrate some grammatical point. Stull draws on the work of Francis Christensen (A New Rhetoric) and the transformstional grammar pioneered by Noam Chomsky.
