C'est non-seulement l'oppose de la tragedie, mais de toute poesie; car la poesie n'est guere que peinture, sentiment et imagination. Les raisonnemens sont necessaires dans une tragedie, quand on delibere sur un grand interet d'etat; il faut seulement qu'alors celui qui raisonne netienne point du sophiste; mais des raisonnemens sur l'amour sont partout hors de saison. L'abbe d'Aubignac ecrivit contreYOEdipe de Corneille; il y reprend plusieurs fautes avec lesquelles une piece pourrait etre admirable: faute de bienseance, duplicite d'action, violation des regles. D'Aubignac n'en savait pas assez pour voir que la principale faute est d'etre froid dans un sujet interessant, et rampant dans un sujet sublime. Cette scene, dans laquelle il n'est question que de savoir si Thesee epousera Antigone qui est parfaite, ou Ismene qui est admirable, ou Dirce qui n'a rien de comparable, est une vraie scene de comedie, mais de comedie tres froide.
