"Composition" by Arthur Wesley Dow is a foundational treatise on art education and design that revolutionized how artists perceive and create visual harmony. Rather than focusing on literal imitation of nature, Dow presents a structured approach to the fundamental elements of art, emphasizing three core principles: line, notan (the interaction of light and dark), and color. By synthesizing Eastern and Western aesthetic traditions, this work moves toward a focus on structural beauty and creative expression. Dow's method encourages the artist to see the underlying architecture of a composition, providing practical guidance on spatial relationships, rhythm, and balance. The text remains an essential resource for students, educators, and professional artists who wish to master the craft of visual arrangement. As one of the most influential manuals in the history of art instruction, "Composition" has guided generations of creatives, including modernists like Georgia O'Keeffe. Its timeless insights into the harmony of shapes and tones make it a vital addition to any library of art theory and practice. Seller's Description:
Used-Very Good. In Composition Dow develops a system for teaching students to create freely constructed images on the basis of harmonic relations between lines, colors, and dark and light patterns. Greatly influenced by Japanese art, he expounds a theory of 'flat' formal equilibrium as an essential component of telling pictorial creation. Generations of teachers and their pupils in the public schools learned from Dow's orientalism and adopted basic post-impressionist principles without even knowing the term. The reappearance of Dow's practical, well-illustrated guide to artistic composition, enhanced by Joseph Masheck's discussion of its historical ramifications, is an important event for all concerned with the visual arts and the intellectual antecedents of American modernism. Arthur Wesley Dow (1857-1922) was a painter, printmaker, and writer, much influenced by Japanese art. Although known as mentor to Georgia O'Keeffe and Max Weber, Dow's legacy as a proponent of modern art has been neglected. His COMPOSITION, first published in 1899, teaches students to create freely constructed images on the basis of harmonic relations between lines, colors, and dark and light patterns. 8 color and 150 b&w illustrations. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks.
