Seller's Description:
Near Fine in Very Good jacket. First edition. Neat contemporary owner name on title page, else fine in very attractive very good or better black and green dust jacket with a couple of modest tears on the rear panel, and a small stain visible only on the inside of the jacket [N.B. : we've also seen both a black and orange variant of the jacket, as well as a black and blue variant, with no established priority]. A very pleasing copy of the author's exceptionally uncommon fourth book, and considered the finest of her "Ohio" novels. Powell was a prolific and well-regarded author, but mostly forgotten until a well-deserved revival was prompted by a 1987 reassessment by Gore Vidal in *The New York Review of Books*. For 40 years she was a valued jewel of the New York literary world and if you read her books it's easy to see why. Ernest Hemingway once referred to her as his "favorite living novelist". At the time of her death all of her books were out of print, now almost all are back in print, including two collections of her novels published by the Library of America. This particular title is exceptionally scarce in jacket, and is one of the two nicest jacketed copy we've seen.
