South African born and bred, David Rattray historian and tour guide, who was tragically murdered on his farm in KwaZulu-Natal in 2007, was an internationally renowned expert on the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879. His knowledge of the conflicts between the Zulu nation and the British had its roots in childhood, as he accompanied his father, a keen amateur historian himself, to interview the local Zulu community whose forbears had fought in the wars, to obtain their accounts of the battles. Later, as a prominent figure in South African tourism, he was instrumental in putting the remote battlefields of the eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal onto the tourist map. It is estimated that his tours have been attended by more than 60 000 visitors. His lecture tours were very popular both here and in England and Fugitives Drift Lodge, which he and his wife Nicky established, remains the destination of preference for visitors to the battlefields, the best known of which are Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift. His encyclopaedic knowledge lives on in this acclaimed guide book. With its magnificent colour artwork, including superb pictures by Jason Askew, detailed maps and lively and informative text, David Rattray's Guidebook to the Anglo-Zulu War Battlefields has proved to be hugely popular with armchair travellers and visitors to the battlefields themselves.
