Dan Jenkins is a smart, funny guy with more experience in the field of golf writing than any five other people you can name (he is one of four golf writers in the World Golf Hall of Fame - and the only one who was inducted while still alive.) He has a dry wit, and a keen observational sense that comes through quite clearly in his writing - as this book proves.
I learned about this book in 1987, when it had already been out for 13 year, from the father of a girl I was dating, whose advice to me was, "Don't read it anyplace where laughing out loud will bother other people." Sage advice, as the book is full of laugh-out-loud moments. Reading this book got me interested in golf, and golf writing, and I am now a freelance golf writer myself.
Though this story is a bit long in the tooth now, the humor and the general observations about professional golf, and life as a professional golfer, still hold up. Yes, the humor may be a bit raunchy from time to time, but it comes from personal knowledge, and experience. If you have never read any of Dan's novels, let this one be an introduction. Read it, then go track down copies of his others - you won't regret it.

I am a golfer, so I appreciated some of the stuff discussed, but I did not think the book was at all funny.

Crude, sophmoric humor
Dan Jenkins obviously has some literary talent but his sense of humor seems stuck in the eighth grade. I understand the book was written before politically correct speech came in vogue. But even in the 1980's, I think I would have been offended by such humor.
Typical of a lot of Jenkins's work, Fort Worth, TX is again the center of his universe. Yes, I know Hogan and Nelson came from there but people like Jones, Hagen, Sarazen, Palmer, Nicklaus and Woods did not. Moreover, I suspect Hogan and Nelson would have been offended by such prose. Jenkins is one reason I am not renewing my subscription to Golf Digest.
If you want good golf fiction, try Troon McAllister's trilogy or "Missing Links" by Rick Reilly.
