This is Roger Hill's account of his war time service as Lt Commander of HMS Ledbury, Grenville and Jervis. He took part in Operation Pedestal to relieve Malta and in the Normandy landings. My interest in the book was because my grandfather was a merchant seaman and was involved in the Malta convoys. Roger Hill was one of the heroes of Operation Pedestal taking his destroyer in the flames engulfing SS Waimarama and he and his crew saved many men's lives.
In his book written about twenty years after the war he conveys unsparingly the strain imposed by the war on himself and the men serving under him.
