This writer has an unusual take on period pieces. Rather than plots and twists to thwart marriages, clans warring and the like; her books seem to revolve around period pieces steeped in soley preparing people for bliss. This novel is about a gal who sacrifices all (her future, her happiness, her purity) to gain riches for her family left destitute after her father died. They were not rich to begin with - but were comfortable. She makes a bargain with a viscount and a baroness to prepare her for marriage (in sale of her body) to a rich man with specific "preferences". Training ensues as does in all the Lee novels I have read. Teaching passion and bedroom skill to obtain a prize (some of her books it is a path to heaven through rituals -this time it is to gain security through marriage to a rich man). The innocent gal proves to be more capable than other gals "trained" by the viscount (he is a marriage broker and trainer of women for the specific purpose of finding a certain type of woman for a man looking for certain "preferences") and he finds much about her that he comes to respect. She falls for him - but he is frozen. He appears to have no soul and cannot be reached. She makes a final attempt to touch him on their final meeting. You will have to read. This is a really interesting book. Not the typical romance novel one reads in period pieces. Refreshing and good.
