Lady Donaldson produced one of the most fair minded assessment of King Edward VIII that has not been matched. Giving equal praise and criticism she gives the portrait of a man who needed the woman he loved by his side as monarch. Later abdication he led the life of a sophisticate, jet setting across the globe except as governor General of the Bahamas. It was exile of a sort for a man who was seen as abandoning his duty. Or was it? American and British are still divided, but the woman at the center of it all was relatively simple, loving, and being loved. If there was regret on their oarts we never see it.
