Seller's Description:
Very Good. Size: 5x0x9; First printing. Crease on back corner. 2007 Trade Paperback. 320 pp. The alien world of medieval Europe lives again, transformed by the physics of the future, by a winner of the Heinlein Award. Over the centuries, one small town in Germany has disappeared and never been resettled. Tom, a historian, and his theoretical physicist girlfriend Sharon, become interested. By all logic, the town should have survived. What's so special about Eifelheim? Father Dietrich is the village priest of Eifelheim, in the year 1348, when the Black Death is gathering strength but is still not nearby. Dietrich is an educated man, and to his astonishment becomes the first contact person between humanity and an alien race from a distant star, when their ship crashes in the nearby forest. It is a time of wonders, in the shadow of the plague. Flynn gives us the full richness and strangeness of medieval life, as well as some terrific aliens. Tom and Sharon, and Father Deitrich have a strange destiny of tragedy and triumph in Eifelheim, the brilliant science fiction novel by Michael Flynn.

Flynn masterfully weaves together the story of a medieval German village, a visit to this planet by aliens from a distant world and modern day physics research. It may not sound like these things would fit together so beautifully, but they do.
Eifelheim is a German village that mysteriously disappeared at about the time of the black death. That is not so strange, but what is strange is that it has never been resettled. This strange fact catches the attention of a modern day historian who begins researching the obscure town. His wife a physicist is doing research of her own that wouldn't seem to intersect his researches, but things are not always what they seem in Eifelheim.
Much of the story is set in the medieval German town and concerns the lives of its residents and center on Father Dietrich, the local priest. Eifelheim tells the story of the small town and what happens when some strangers from very far away come to visit.
The depth of the characters, the richness of the history and the excellent writing make for a story that is powerful and believable despite its imaginative premise

Fantasy with thought
Have you ever wondered what beings from another planet would do if they had crashed in medieval Germany? I never had, but Michael Flynn wrote about such an encounter, and how the encounter is discovered by a modern day scientist. This is a captivating book with remarkable characters that stay in a reader's heart long after the book is finished.
