Love in the time of conflict (Palestinian-Israeli)
This is a story of the relationship between David,a Jewish-American lawyer, and Hana,a Palestinian Arab woman, also trained as a lawyer. The background of the story is the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The background story brings out the fundamental issue of the Palestinian desire of "right-to-return". This book is an example of existentialism with the defining incident being the affair between David and Hana during the law school years. In the course of the story,David gives up all his well-ordered and planned life,as well as the friendship and respect of the San Francisco Jewish community, to defend Hana, who is accused of complicity in the assassination the Israeli Prime Minister during his visit to San Francisco.

OK but overlong and lacking story
Richard North Patterson is a great crime/legal thriller writer, and he usually sets the story with a backdrop of real-life issues such as abortion, etc., that are bound to get polarizing and therefore compelling characters. Here, the backdrop is the Israel-Palestine conflict, and Patterson does a very good job of showing both sides of this enormous world problem.
But...somewhere along the way, the story suffers. The 'suprise' twist was something I guessed on maybe page 150, and the book is 768 pages long. The courtroom drama, Patterson's strength, was SO secondary to the plot that the book suffered greatly.
As an account of a world problem, it's good (though not nearly as much as many non-fiction works by journalists)...as a story, with characters and plot lines that should grip the readers interest...it's not nearly as much of a success.
