One of the classic early gay novels from the 50's. Well written, and surprisingly current in feeling at times. It concerns a young American boy who travels with his recently-divorced mother to France. In boarding school, he first deals with his feelings for another boy. But it is with a teacher that he really falls in love. He loves freely, and wants to do so openly, but everyone around him is terrified of such a prospect. This book is often accused of being negative, and it has its share of self-hatings gays. It comes from the era when there could be no happy endings for gays, but it is more than that. The boys feelings are real, and sweet. Though he cannot overcome the predjudice around him, he does make a good, early case for open and true gay love.
