"Fire and Blood" is a tour de force by Fehrenbach. He sweeps the reader along with a story that is epic in scale and tragic in content. Mexico, almost from it's Amerindian origins, is shown to have evolved in ways that constrained it's brave and talented peoples to follow blind alleys. Misery and bloodshed followed. The presence of a powerful and alien neighbour compounded the misfortune (at least, to Mexican sensibilities). Fehrenbach deals with the complexities of Hispanic culture and politics clearly, and his writing style suits the grandeur of Mexico's history. His admiration and sympathy for the indomitable Mexican people show, but do not distort his clear judgements. This is a superb book, fit to stand with his "Comanches: The History of a People".
