The story begins when Dusty receives a mysterious phone call from a boy who says he is going to kill himself. She is annoyed by the call, but then the boy seems to know things about her he shouldn't know, and her interest is really piqued when he mentions Josh, her brother who went missing a couple of years ago.
As she tries to track down the mysterious boy, Dusty is thwarted along the way not only by friends and relatives attempting to look out for her, but also by some sketchy men who don't seem to be all that concerned for her well-being.
As the story progresses Dusty finds herself struggling to solve two mysteries. The first is the mystery of her missing brother. The second is the mystery of the strange boy. I would like to say that by the conclusion of the novel both mysteries were satisfactorily resolved, but while the Josh mystery is worked out, we still don't know entirely what the deal is with the strange boy.
I'll be honest. As much as I enjoy science fiction, I am not a huge fan of fantasy. I don't want to say that I am opposed to all fantasy, but too much of it is garbage, and I have no patience for all the hocus pocus crap. I like for things to make sense. I like for there to be rational explanations for things and this can be done really well in a fantasy novel, but it can also be done poorly. Frozen Fire, I fear, is a novel that falls into the latter camp. In a world that is otherwise like ours, we are supposed to accept that there is one individual that has mysterious powers and abilities for no apparent reason. Throw in a bizarre Frankenstein-like mob of angry townsfolk and one's credulity becomes stretched to the breaking point.
If you are looking for a young adult thriller with a touch of the supernatural, try The White Darkness by Geraldine McCaughrean instead, while it stretched one's credulity at times, it did all come down to a nice, neat and satisfying conclusion. Frozen Fire just sort of fizzles out. I closed the book feeling perplexed and cheated.
