My belief is that if James Reston writes it, you should probably read it. Galileo: A Life is a fascinating examination of Galileo, his times and the Catholic Church in both Galileo's time, and in the 20th Century. Reston does his usual excellent job of taking us to the 17th Century, giving us Galileo's story as well as the political and social history of the period. One cannot help but come away from reading Galileo: A Life with a better understanding of the complexities of the man himself and his times and, literally, his trials. The human foibles of Galileo and his opponents are realistically and sympathetically portrayed, while not ignoring the sinister elements of the corruption of power and delusion. It was my absolute pleasure to read this book. I highly recommend it.

Illuminating Pictorial of Renaissance
This is another wonderful book by James Reston on one of two periods of history he has written extensively about. His writing is crisp and, while a non-fiction work, holds the reader's interest beginning to end. A well researched work written in a dazzling literary style. It is not just a historic biography but a peak life in late renaissance Italy.

Perfect for the educated reader
James Reston has done a thorough job with Galileo without making it a scientific tract, yet the book is perfect for the educated reader. And he has shown how the Catholic church still does not admit its wrong with Galileo, which, as a Catholic, I state is a sin. Very good read.
