While Artan was seen in a couple of the other Highland books, this is his story. Since he was a warrior who was less than skilled in his dealings with people (he was rude, crude and harsh) one would expect no less than for him to be called "barbarian". After reading a couple of the books, I was hoping for stories about him and his twin Lucas (Savage is Lucas' story). I was pleased with this story. The back story starts right away when he is asked to do something for gain to himself - before he even meets the gal in the story. Thus, setting up the stage for fireworks with him and the gal later on. One knows that this will be a good twist as all these types of dealings are eventually found out.... She is a gal who has been taken advantage of, abused and treated harshly - even cut off from almost all contact from people except those that have permission. Thus, she is very naive and distrustful and does not know the full breadth of her own life/story. This adds strength to the possibility of plot twists and which has a reader anticipating a good story. His mission - collect the girl for her uncle and if she pleases him - he can have her and the uncle's castle as a laird once the laird steps down or passes. As the story moves throughout - one can sense that although not a "proper" arranged brotrothel - this is certainly an arranged marriage if the uncle can manage it. Artan goes, comes to much danger himself while collecting the lass. She is totally in the dark about everything about her situation and finds herself promised to a cur. In order to save her and maintain legal status they get together and "handfast" themselves to each other so that he can legally take her away from the cur while travelling back to her uncle. However, not willing to lose or give up, they must face danger when the cur shows (more than once) up to take her away. The story is full of twists (and yes romance - well duplicate love scenes copied exactly from any of the other of Howell's books - easily forgiven since the romance is not what makes the story - just boring to read exactly the same love story in 5-6 books....) and it substantial enough to carry the book - even with the copied text. I recommend as Artan is nice to watch as he turns from ruffian to near human. My only wish would be that Howell would be more creative in her love scenes and her men - or cut the love scenes out all together (even better!) and make her plots substantial enough to stand alone (which many are). It is boring to read the same love scenes over and over again with the only difference being the character names. For the sake of romance in novels it is fine, but since this story is good enough without the love scenes she could cut them out and make it just a good novel - rather than a good novel with copied scenes from any one of a number of her books. She needs to change her characters or their thinking or their abilities some so that one is not a carbon copy of the last book one has read of hers.
