Les oiseaux de mer s'abattaient jusque sur lui pour l'avaler, mais, des qu'ils l'avaient regarde de pres, ils s'en allaient plus loin, pensant que ce n'etait point un plat de leur cuisine. Enfin il vint un grand aigle qui le prit assez delicatement dans son bec et qui l'emporta a travers les airs. Gribouille eut un peu peur de se voir si haut, mais il sentit bientot qu'en le sechant l'air lui donnait de la force et de la nourriture, car sa faim le quitta, et il se fut trouve fort a l'aise si les projets de l'aigle a son egard ne lui eussent donne quelque inquietude. Cependant, comme il continuait a penser et a raisonner sous sa forme de branche, il se dit bientot: Je suis pres de terre, puisque l'aigle, qui n'est pas un oiseau marin, est venu me chercher dans les eaux; il m'emporte, et ce n'est pas pour me manger, car il aime la chair et non pas les glands; il veut donc faire de moi une broussaille pour son nid, et bientot sans doute je vais me trouver sur le faite d'un arbre ou d'un rocher. Il vit bientot le rivage et une grande ile deserte ou il n'y avait que des arbres, de l'herbe et des fleurs qui brillaient au soleil et embaumaient l'air a vingt lieues a la ronde. Sterling condition hardcover copy bound most handsomely in red cloth, with gilt and black lettering and illustrations to front cover and spine, black-embossed designs to rear cover, with unbruised tips, tight binding, and clean internals, showing only very slight shelf-and edge-wear; not ex-library, with neither underlining nor highlighting anywhere. Brilliant, colorful illustration in paper, inset to front cover. Engravings by Delaville, vignettes by Maurice Sand, and a particularly fetching black-and-white frontispiece of the young Gribouille. Else and withal, a quite lovely children's book in French. The author, Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin, was a leading novelist, poet and socialist of her day. Born on July 1, 1804, in Paris, France, having passed away on June 8, 1876, in her adopted village of Nohant, she is known particularly for publishing so-called rustic novels. This novel was first published in 1850.
