Emily Carr's journals during her later years are reproduced in this book. She writes about her daily life, but more importantly she writes about how she struggles to find the essence of what she is painting. The soul of the subject, whether it is trees or a mountain or a landscape, must be found...that painting ,and in fact all creative work, is finding the connection to God, whatever you conceive him to be. The God that is within us is also in each created thing, and finding that essence is what makes a painting touch your heart. The writing is direct from her heart. Her own struggles with how people see her work, the pain of having it rejected, and her decision that it matters not what others think - the work has to come from her own soul. She talks of her loneliness, her deep desire for soul-mates. She envies The Group of Seven because they have each other. She speaks of her intense loneliness. I am not a painter, and yet this work, this search for the creative soul, touched me deeply. It is a book I will go back to again and again.
