Father Gumede, or Priest, is disheartened after witnessing the treatment of the poor on the farm he works on. When he loses his job there he realises that in a world where survival is uncertain and the effects of living often cruel and merciless, he can't afford to love his neighbour as he does himself. Despondent and enraged by his situation, Priest cuts off all ties to the church and with politics, determined to make his own living - even if this requires dishonesty on his own part. But when he is given an opportunity to act against the forces constraining him and his family, Priest learns of the hope and humanity inherent in the spirit of those challenging injustice.
