I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Walker had a good eye for detail and was able to observe which added to the imagery in his writing. However, to me, the book is a little disjointed. He based himself in Cuenca, for the early chapters, had to leave abruptly and later returned to Spain. Then he travelled to wherever took his fancy but it does leave the reader a little confused where he actually is - also there are no real dates in the text, which may not have been relevant at the time but now reading it almost as 'history' it would have helped to have had that detail. The book covers late 70s/early 80s so post Franco era. This book is not very well known which is a shame as it does fill a gap between the earlier publications of Brenan/Lee and the current generation.
