How the entire country pulled together for the World Wars is a forgotten theme as the years pass. The wars since Vietnam generally have been protested as much as supported. "Invitation to Valhalla" is an interesting reminder of how ordinary Americans were thrust into historic roles on the world stage. It's a well-researched story of espionage, patriotism, and detective work. Whicker paces the story well, even if the depth of the German history at teh beginning may lull some readers (I liked it).
Only one name was changed from the real life players in this drama which gives it significantly more punch as historical fiction.
Few people remember how places like Evansville, Indiana converted into critical wartime resources, or would ever think it was actually the setting for German spy intrique.
Recommended for WWII buffs, spy novel readers, detective stories and those with an interest in the history of the American Midwest.
