Sympathetic, but honest assessment
Hudson Strode was a significant Southern writer whose scholarship is unquestioned. You may not always respect his presuppositilns about life in the South Jefferson Davis knew and defended, but you will appreciate the humanity and love this remarkable man exhibited throughout his life up until the actual commencement of the War Between the States. By all means, read William Davis and other historians, but don't leave out Strode to give yourself a more complete assessment of this remarkable man.
