Written in the 1990s by American author Steven Gould, Jumper tells the story of Davy Rice as he escapes his tortured childhood to explore the world via teleportation and find his long lost mother. At seventeen the world is at your feet... especially if you can teleport. David Rice barely remembers his mother. She left his alcoholic father when Davy was very young. She left Davy too, and since then all of William Rice's abusive anger has been focused on his young teenage son. One evening, as he is about to receive another brutal beating, Davy shuts his eyes and wishes to be safe. When he opens them again, he finds himself in his small town's library. Slowly, he realises he is very special, he can teleport. Armed with his new power, Davy sets out with new purpose: he will leave his abusive home and find his long lost mother. Davy's confidence grows as his skills do, but they also draw unwanted attention and soon Davy finds that he too is hunted.

Steven Gould's JUMPER is a fun-filled escape read. It is packed with a kind of heart-felt yearning for privacy and action. Nothing like the movie that was supposedly based on the book, this story is a personal account of a boy/man with a unique ability to travel across recognizable space.
The book isn't going to blow you away with depth and action and excitement. It is a small personal story of triumph and winning over adversity and what is right and wrong.
I recomment this book to those who aren't looking for epic stories of worlds fighting for survival or the fate of life, as we know it, hanging in the balance. This is just one man's fight for his life.

Sci Fi at its Finest
Gould's sci fi adventure of a teleport youngster will thrill fans of the genre, especially because it will be a movie next year. The book reads easily, and it is easy to see how it will appeal on the big screen.
The book is the story of Davy and how he discovers his ability in an attempt to escape his violent home life. The story chronicles how his talent affects the choices he must make as a youth and a young man, and is, in many ways, a debate between good and evil.
I would highly recommend this book, and cannot wait to continue the story in Gould's book 'Reflex'.
