In the authors defense I'm sure it isn't easy writing a biography of an illiterate man that died almost 150 years ago. The first two thirds of the book is mostly bits and pieces of history that are in my opinion quite choppy in the way they're presented and redundant to anyone that has done much reading on the fur trade. The last third of the book is much better in it's prortrayal of his life as an indian agent, military and family man. Although parts of this section of the book still has incidents regarding unconnected characters in minor events thrown in that only serve to confuse the overall story and make it a less pleasurable read.
