Her first novel sold 250,000 copies; and she had total sales of 2 million books in her lifetime, second only to Harriet Beecher Stowe. Her books included: "Tempest and Sunshine" (1854), "English Orphans" (1855), "Homestead on the Hillside" (1855), "Lena Rivers" (1856), "Meadow Brook" (1857), "Dora Deane" (1858), "Cousin Maude" (1860), "Marian Gray" 186^, "Hugh Worthington" (1864), "Cameron Vide" (1867). "Lena Rivers" is one of many novels written by M.J. Holmes in America in the 1800s. If I recall correctly, 1856 is the publication date for "Lena Rivers." Essentially the story of a half-orphan who goes through trials and tribulations living with her brother's snobbish wife and children after her grandfather's death, the novel seems to specialize in misunderstandings on the part of potential lovers. The suspense builds. Will Lena EVER get together with the person who is obviously fated to be her mate? Holmes has a great sense of humor, and there are some stock characters that "perform" for the reader and are quite entertaining. I read this when I had the flu, and I believe it contributed to my recovery. What an escape! Not even any brand names to bring contemporary times into my mind!
