Sex, blood and rock'n'roll - from the master of gothic horror At a club in Missing Mile, just outside New Orleans, the children of the night gather. They dress in black and they're looking for acceptance. There's Ghost, who sees what others do not; Ann, looking for love; and Jason, whose real name is Nothing, seeking the deathless truth about his father - and himself. But into Missing Mile tonight come three beautiful, hip vagabonds: Molochai, Twig and seductive, green-eyed Zillah. They are on their own lost journey, slaking their ancient thirst for blood, aching for supple young flesh. In Nothing and Ann they find it. Now Ghost must pursue them all. To save Ann from her new friends, to save Nothing from himself. First published in the early 90s, Lost Souls redefined the vampire novel for a new generation and remains unsurpassed in its dark wit, graphic descriptions and its power to send shivers of panic and pleasure down your spine...

I find it difficult to call Poppy Z. Brite an author. Especially after reading this book. A friend of mine who lived briefly in New Orleans had a job on the vampire tours (years before Katrina). He was a frequent guest of mysterious local character who went by the name of Pierre Lafitte. Yes like the French pirate. He would invite several of the city's well known citizens or well known oddballs to his place for private partys. And she was one of them. And for some reason being a guide on the vampire tours had allowed my friend access to these partys. One of Pierre's frequent guests was Poppy Z. Brite, and from what I was told she was the party pest. Often going into one of the rooms (which I cannot say what the room was used for here) and making outlandish and bizarre requests that made the other guests leave said room.
The reason I bring this story up is because well, after reading this book and hearing of her reputation it confirmed what a sick person she is. This story focuses on Jason. Another disaffected teen who is adopted. He feels out of place in this world so he runs away to find some band who's music he connects to. Along the way he meets three vampires Molochai, Twig and Zillah. Oh he learns his true heritage in the process.
This book is full of incest, sex and nonesense. It felt as though it was written by a depressed goth high school senior who's intent was meant to shock instead of to entertain.
