Although this book is listed as * by Max Ernst*, as it undoubtedly is his art and diary excerpts translated from German, the actual book cover names Werner Spies as author. Werner Spies, an art historian, also made a film on the art of Max Ernst when the artist was alive, and both are in the film together and were friends. After watching Max Ernst demonstrate some frottage techniques in the film (now available on DVD), I searched out books for more, and found this to be the one book on the topic of his frottages specifically. There are several pages of text, including footnotes,bibliography, and list of illustrations headed by the statement, that, "The untitled illustrations scattered throughout the text were executed by the artist in 1968 especially for the first edition of this volume.
