Thom and his son were responsible for a major investigation into the stone circles and monoliths that abound in Brittany and Britain. This work in particular shows how these puzzling constructions can be explained and more importantly shows that they have a similarity of purpose whether they be in Brittany, Orkney or in Wiltshire. All of the recording was done in the days before GPS and it involved a huge amount of work. Broadly Thom in a series of works (of which this is one) attempt to show that there was some consistency in the units of measurement used in meglithic times, that many of these constructions had a probable purpose directed toward marking the extremes of the moon's motions as seen from earth and in some cases of doing something similar for the sun. Some have attempted to deride some of his results because some of his suggested alignments are not (by today's scientific standards) exact or because his statistical analyses might not be those that would be done today. An odd and rather deperate argument when even some 2-3000 years later, in mediaeval times there was little interest in precision of anything, whether it was in the measurement of time, in dimensions of buildings and even in church alignment. The fact remains that Thom has shown that, approximate or not, there is a great and impressive similarity of purpose to many and perhaps to almost all stone circles of any size. in Western Europe. An excellent book summarising work of enormous magnitude. Well worth a read and incidentally well worth getting more of his series.
