It quickly became apparent, however, that Mozart was writing music for true professionals and not amateurs, Hoffmeister's target sales demographic. Mozart's choice of instrumentation was an unusual one for the time, too; piano quartets were not at all a common genre and would not gain popularity for many years after his death. The two works he did complete in the genre are highly contrasting masterpieces. The G minor quartet opens with one of Mozart's most tragic, insistent motives, while the E flat quartet is a much sunnier, lighthearted affair. It was not until several years later that the quartets finally gained in the admiration and acceptance they deserve. This Hyperion reissue features the Leopold String Trio and pianist Paul Lewis.
