The personal recollections of some Italian officers and private soldiers are presented in this study, providing a portrait of the Italian soldier during the years of fascism under Mussolini. Rex Trye was born in New Zealand and comes from a family with generations of military service. His great-great grandfather served in India for over two decades and was involved in responding to the Indian Mutiny. He has had a long-standing interest in military history and has for most of his career been involved in publishing. This book begins with a broad historical overview of the rise of Fascism in Italy and describes the military doctrine and organization of the different combat and service units. The September 8, 1943 armistice in which Italy surrendered to the allies is outlines as is the fall of Mussolini and the beginning of the of Italy's active participation in the Second World War.
