Roleplaying for all hero genres
Mutants & Masterminds 2nd Edition is a roelplaying game using a system derived from the d20 game system, made famous by Dungeon & Dragons 3rd Edition (published by Wizards of the Coast).
However, the game system of Mutants & Masterminds was revised to adapt more to the superhero genre, dropping and reworking several rules (no hit points, attack and defense statistics not derived at all from abilities, no feats tree, etc...). The game ruleset is also based on the concept of "power levels", basically the upper limit of the player character powers. It diverges from traditionnal roleplaying where characters are ever increasing in power, unless the gamemaster finally allow a rise in "power level".
Mutants & Masterminds approach to the creation of heroes is the one of a toolkit. Presenting a list of mainly generic power effects, to vary by applying advantages and flaws or special uses. The listing is quite extensive and synthetic, covering the vast majority of powers displayed by heroes in comics..
The downside of the toolkit is you are at first a bit overwhelmed by the options possible. Tinkering with all options is an easy exercise when you know the rules, have read the book (generally what the gamemaster is doing). So for new players, creating rapidly a hero character might be daunting.
Even with a precise idea, the way to combine the options allow several possibilities. This isn"t a flaw by itself but it still means the first game could actually turn into a character creation session. The book however propose "ready to play" archetypes.
Finally, Mutants & Masterminds 2nd Edition is also giving much attention on how to create a superhero game, browsing, exploring the various subgenre of heroes stories over time (Golden Age, Silver Age, etc). More generally, the advices to the gamemaster are good and worth a reading even for experienced gamers.
Well written, with solid rules, inspired, Mutants & Masterminds is one of the most popular superhero roleplaying games currently. For a reason.
