This is the first book I have read by Fiona McIntosh, but it won't be the last.
The book starts off strong with a battle scene that is not quite epic, but certainly got my attention. The story line includes a torture scene near the beginning that might give you nightmares, but it is only as gruesome as the plot requires.
When the actual 'gift' is revealed, I was actually caught off guard.... that certainly does not happen often in the genre. I was a little disappointed with the final twist at the end, but it didn't turn me off enough to keep me from purchasing the next two books in the series.
In summation, I have to say that this will never go down as one of the great novels of our time, but it is certainly a pleasant escape and fun to read.
