"Don't lose your temper," advised the Duchess, settling her spectacles more firmly on her nose. "I didn't ask you to help me. I just told you what some people would do. I don't need anybody's help," she boasted. "I've done very well by myself. If you are going out will you please shut the door behind you?" Nancy was ready to vow that she would shut the door behind her, and she would not open it in front of her again. Really, the Duchess was far too duchesslike. "I suppose it is because she is alone in the world," she told Mabel Morse. She just had to find a reason for the Duchess' peculiarities, and loneliness seemed an excellent reason. Mabel stared at her. "Who told you she was alone in the world? Don't you know about the wonderful Bertram?" "Bertram?" Nancy had not heard a word of any Bertram. "Her nephew." "But no one ever comes to see her!" Nancy found it hard to Believe in a nephew who was not occasionally at the door. "It isn't as if she were sick. And he hates hospitals, --the smell." Mabel laughed indulgently. "He says it stupefies him, and he can't run risks. The roses are from him. I suppose he gives the florist an order to send them twice a week.
