This book is about what happens after the happy ending. Sure, you can have two dudes who love each other and fight the odds and ride off into the sunset to roger each other senseless, but what happens the next morning when someone's trick knee's out and the horse has colic and it's raining?
Jake and Tor return a few weeks after their first book, Bareback left off. They've bought the ranch, are hopelessly in love, and Jake might even have a future with his long estranged family. Then bam: Jake's sister is killed in a car crash, and they become the guardians of a 14-yr-old teenager. Along with just having bought a ranch and being two stubborn men hopelessly in love.
Gosh this book was good. I don't even know where to start. No, that's a lie, I do: Jake and Tor are amazing characters. I adored them. I want four more books about them. The supporting characters, Elias the deadpan old ranch hand and Jacob, the teenager, are a riot, but beyond that, Owen integrates all her characters with ease, and handles the plot well. It's a fairly simple plot, which allows for a lot of time spent on character development; the book is not just Jake and Tor, but the people who surround and love them--and those who don't--and how the two of them react to it all, and it really makes for a great read.
The ranch is well-drawn as an honest-to-good working ranch, and provides a good underlying support for the action. Owens' writing style has matured, I think, from Bareback, with better sentence-level mechanics and easier control, better pacing. I've seen some negative reviews of this book that all basically ask: "Who wants to read about two dudes in a long-standing relationship, negotiating hurdles?"
Uh, me. Right here! Woo!
At the heart of it all are two people hopelessly in love with each other, so in love they don't need words to communicate, and sometimes words just get in the way of what they're trying to say. And those two characters really made both this book and the first one two of my favorites. Outstanding.
Absolutely stunning. This will definitely be a re-read.
